Okan Can is a senior partner at Deris.

Okan counsels market-leading companies in the protection and enforcement of IP rights. His expertise extends to IP litigation, strategy, transactional IP, technology licensing, anti-counterfeiting and data privacy.

In 2016 the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office invited Okan to participate in and work on the commission established for the preparation of the new Code of Industrial Property, which was enacted on 10 January 2017.

In 2022 he was invited to contribute the 12th State’s 5 years development plan as a part of the IP Commission.

He is also active in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods. He has passed the exams of the Ministry of Justice and become eligible for acting as Mediator. He usually speaks at WIPO events to promote the implementation of ADR in IP disputes.

Okan  was the first Turkish attorney to be selected for the International Trademark Association (INTA) Board for a 3 years period as from 2022. He has also been the member of the Executive Committee of the INTA Board for 2023 -2025. He was also nominated to be the first Board member from Turkey of the Global Intellectual Property Alliance, (GLIPA) as created out of the United States IP Alliance.

He is listed in the IAM Strategy 300 as one of the World’s Leading 300 IP Strategists , WTR Global Leaders, IAM Patent 1000, Managing Intellectual Property’s IP Stars, The Legal 500, WIPR and the WTR 1000 (2016 through 2024) in the gold tier for litigation and enforcement  In 2022 Okan was selected as Patent Litigator of the Year: Biotech by LMG Life Sciences across EMEA.

Highlights

Mr. Can has achieved notable results in IP disputes and has represented:

• a leading technology market player in an extensive project to license and litigate patents where he has achieved more than approx 1,1 million Euros during the settlement;
• a multinational firm in complex multi-jurisdictional IP litigation, in which he achieved one of the highest compensation awards (approx. 2,1 million USD for an IP conflict in Turkey;
• a multi-jurisdictional patent litigation concerning DNA technologies,
• a multinational tobacco firm during the acquisition of the IP assets of a Turkish state monopoly.
• well known to food&beverage multinational firm for registering its first per se color trademark in Turkiye,
• The first Standard Essential Patent (SEP) owner’s licensing program for optical disc technology, which resulted in licensing of more than 90% of the related market in the country
